NSSA Raises Space Superiority and Warfighter Concerns in Letters to Congress
The National Security Space Association (NSSA) has sent letters to the leadership of the House and Senate Armed Services Committees and Defense Appropriations Subcommittees, calling for budgetary flexibility to help Space Force leaders mitigate the national security risks of continuing resolutions.
The letters highlight the scale of the proposed Space Force expansion—from $31.6 billion in FY2026 to approximately $71 billion requested for FY2027, including base and reconciliation funding. NSSA emphasizes that maintaining prior-year activity does not enable the Service to deliver the larger, more capable force envisioned in the request. The risks extend beyond new starts to existing programs anticipating substantial growth.
Illustrative examples include missile detection, warning and tracking; protecting U.S. space systems and countering adversary use of space; and survivable communications for nuclear command and control. The letters warn that delayed fielding could leave U.S. forces operating longer without the additional warning, protection, and resilience these investments are intended to provide.
NSSA calls for maximum budgetary flexibility through anomalies, reprogramming, and other available mechanisms to help fund and field capabilities on operationally relevant timelines. As the letters state: “Budget delays do not slow the threat. They slow America’s response.”
